Khibiny National Park, National park in Murmansk Oblast, Russia.
Khibiny National Park is a protected mountain landscape on the western Kola Peninsula, with a central massif surrounded by low-lying plains on all sides. Two substantial lakes cut through the terrain, creating distinct water features within the park's boundaries.
The park was established in 2018 to protect an area with archaeological remains from the Neolithic period and medieval Sami times. These discoveries show that people have lived and traveled through these mountains for thousands of years.
The mountains hold deep meaning for the Sami people, whose herding practices and ancient settlements shaped life here for hundreds of years. Their connection to these landscapes remains visible in the way locals speak about the terrain and move through it.
The park maintains marked trails and information stations for visitors exploring the landscape in warmer months, while winter opens opportunities for skiing and snowshoeing. Trails range in difficulty, so you can choose a route suited to your fitness level and available time.
More than half of all rare plant species found in the Murmansk region live here, including varieties that grow nowhere else nearby, such as the Lapland poppy. Botanists and nature lovers will discover species in these mountains that cannot be found in surrounding areas.
