Church of the Transfiguration

The Church of the Transfiguration is a neoclassical cathedral in Torzhok featuring five blue domes and Doric porticos positioned along the Tvertsa River in the city center. The structure displays symmetrical facades and architectural details that are visible from multiple angles throughout the area.

Italian architect Carlo Rossi designed this cathedral in 1822 to replace an earlier religious building from 1364. The new structure marked a shift toward European classical styles in this Russian city.

The cathedral combines Russian Orthodox traditions with neoclassical design elements typical of the Russian Empire era. This blend appears in its columned porticos and geometric layout, visible to anyone walking around the exterior.

The building is currently closed to visitors due to ongoing renovation work, but the exterior can be viewed from several nearby locations. Daytime visits offer the best natural light to see the architectural details and dome colors clearly.

Each of the five domes features a different shade of blue, creating a gradual color transition across the Torzhok skyline. This intentional color variation is a detail that many visitors overlook at first glance.
