Muzeĭ-kvartira F.M. Dostoevskogo, Biographical museum in Maryina Roshcha District, Moscow, Russia.
Muzeĭ-kvartira F.M. Dostoevskogo is a biographical museum in the Maryina Roshcha District of Moscow, set in the apartment where the writer spent the last years of his life. The rooms are furnished with original pieces, personal objects, and manuscripts from that period.
The writer moved into this apartment in 1878, within the Mariinsky Hospital complex where his father had once worked as a doctor, and he stayed until his death in 1881. In 1928 the apartment was turned into a museum to preserve the space.
The writer's desk still sits in the study where he spent his final working years, surrounded by books and papers that reflect his reading habits. Walking through the rooms, visitors get a clear sense of how closely daily life and writing were intertwined in this household.
The museum sits within the Mariinsky Hospital complex, and the entrance is most easily found by walking through the main courtyard. Visiting on a weekday tends to be quieter and gives more time to look at the rooms without feeling rushed.
Dostoevsky grew up in this same hospital complex, as his father worked there as a staff doctor and the family lived on the grounds during his childhood. He returned here as an adult, making this place part of both the beginning and the end of his life.
