Blue Bridge, Heritage bridge in Kronstadt, Russia
Blue Bridge is a road bridge in Kronstadt, Russia, spanning the Obvodny Canal and featuring blue painted metal railings with granite supports on each side. It carries both vehicle and foot traffic and connects different parts of the city along Makarovskaya Street.
The bridge was built in the late 1700s and opened in 1801, making it one of the older crossings in the area. A major renovation in the mid-20th century strengthened the structure and gave it its current form.
A bronze plaque on the bridge marks the water level reached during the 1824 flood, which inspired Pushkin to write his famous poem "The Bronze Horseman". Reading the plaque today connects the visitor directly to one of the most celebrated works in Russian literature.
The bridge is open at all times and can be reached on foot from the surrounding streets in the city center. Walking along the canal banks nearby gives a good view of the railings and the granite supports.
A water gauge dating to 1840 is mounted on one of the bridge abutments and was once used as the standard reference point for water level measurements across the Soviet Union. This small instrument carried a role that stretched far beyond the local canal.
