Mourning Angel, Memorial sculpture in Central Park, Tolyatti, Russia.
The Mourning Angel is a bronze sculpture in the Central Park of Tolyatti, showing a seated figure holding an open book. Granite slabs stand behind the statue, carved with names and short texts.
The memorial was inaugurated on October 30, 2005, the national day of remembrance for victims of political repression in Russia. A temporary plaster version stood on the site before the final bronze work was put in place.
The stone slabs behind the figure carry the names of people from the region who were persecuted during the Soviet era. Visitors can walk along the slabs and read the names, which gives the site a personal and human scale.
The memorial sits in the middle of the park and is easy to reach on foot from the main paths. Commemorative gatherings take place at the site around late October each year.
After a fatal bus accident in Tolyatti in 2007, residents gathered at this memorial to light candles, even though the site has no official connection to that event. The gathering showed that the place had grown into a general point of mourning for the city.
