Staraya Ryazan, Ancient settlement ruins in Spassky District, Russia
The archaeological site extends across 67 hectares, containing foundations of medieval buildings, defensive structures, and religious monuments along the riverside location.
The settlement functioned as a regional capital until its destruction by Mongol forces under Batu Khan in December 1237, leading to its complete abandonment.
Archaeological excavations have revealed numerous jewelry hoards, including intricate gold pieces, medallions, and ornaments produced by local craftsmen for the ruling elite.
The federal heritage site maintains regular opening hours, with guided tours available through the Ryazan Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve administration.
The 2013 excavation uncovered a complete medieval jewelry workshop containing tools and raw materials, providing direct evidence of manufacturing techniques.
