The Church of the Ascension of Christ in Gorohovo polye is an Orthodox church in the Basmanny District of Moscow, recognizable by its yellow and white facade with classical details. A tall bell tower rises above the rest of the building and can be seen from the surrounding streets.
The church was first built in 1733, and later reworked by architect Matvei Kazakov. After the Moscow Fire of 1812 damaged the structure, it went through major restoration work that shaped its current appearance.
The church is where Alexander Pushkin married Natalia Goncharova in 1831, making it a place tied to one of Russia's most celebrated writers. Visitors interested in Russian literary history often come here specifically because of this connection.
The church is in the Basmanny District and easy to reach on foot from the surrounding streets. Visiting outside of service hours gives you more space to look around inside without disruption.
Patriarch Tikhon of Moscow held his last church service here before his death in 1925. A side chapel inside the building is dedicated to him and can still be visited today.
