Schluzovoy Bridge, Cantilever bridge on Vodootvodny Canal, Moscow, Russia.
Schluzovoy Bridge is a cantilever bridge spanning the Vodootvodny Canal in Moscow and connecting the right bank areas of the Moskva River. The structure consists of two large projecting consoles that meet in the center to form a continuous roadway for vehicles.
The bridge was constructed in 1965 according to designs by engineer Z.V. Freydina, replacing an earlier temporary wooden structure. That earlier crossing had carried trams and automobiles over the canal since the 1930s.
This bridge shows Soviet engineering design from the 1960s through its functional approach to crossing the waterway. Visitors can observe the practical style of that era in how the structure prioritizes function over decoration.
The roadway is about 15 meters (49 feet) wide and accommodates cars, bicycles, and pedestrians crossing between both banks. The best approach is from the right side of the river, and the bridge offers good views of the canal and surrounding area.
The bridge creates an optical illusion by appearing to arch like a traditional curved bridge, when it actually consists of two separate cantilevered sections. These two consoles meet precisely at the center, creating the impression of a continuous arching structure.
