Kurgan Bessmertiya, Memorial complex in Sovetskiy District, Bryansk, Russia
Kurgan Bessmertiya is a war memorial in Solovyi Park, made of an 18-meter tall concrete star mounted on a 12-meter pentagonal earthen mound. A granite staircase leads to an observation platform at the summit, offering views across the park and surrounding areas.
The memorial was built on May 7, 1967, and contains soil from five Soviet hero cities: Stalingrad, Brest Fortress, Odessa, Leningrad, and Sevastopol. This connection to other major battle sites gave it symbolic importance beyond the local region.
The five-pointed star serves as a memorial for residents who died during the war, and locals visit to pay respects and reflect on sacrifice. This shape reflects Soviet identity and remains meaningful to the community today.
The granite steps are well maintained and provide safe access to the summit platform where you can enjoy the views. The site is an easy walk through the park and is open to visitors at any time of day.
An artillery shell containing a time capsule with a message to future generations was buried beneath the earthen mound during construction. This hidden element adds another layer of meaning to the memorial, passing memories forward in time.
