Шієс, Railway station settlement in Urdoma Municipality, Russia
Shies is a railway station in a remote part of Arkhangelsk Oblast, situated among marshland and dense taiga forest. The station serves the Moscow-Vorkuta line as a transit point but has limited regular service.
The station began operations as part of the Northern Railway network in the early 20th century, serving the Arkhangelsk region. The settlement beside it was inhabited until 2002, when residents departed due to lack of economic opportunities in such a remote location.
The station gained national attention in 2018 when local residents organized large gatherings to protect the surrounding environment from a proposed waste management facility.
The best time to visit is during warmer months, as the area is otherwise dominated by snow and swamp mud. Travellers should bring sturdy clothing and gear suitable for wet conditions.
The station sits within a protected drinking water zone where numerous swamps feed into the Vychegda River. These waterways are crucial to the region's freshwater supply.
