Ts. S. Sampilov Art Museum

The Ts. S. Sampilov Art Museum is an art institution in Ulan-Ude that holds approximately 10,000 works from Russian and Buddhist traditions. The collection includes paintings, sculptures, and decorative objects displayed in permanent galleries and rotating exhibitions featuring contemporary regional artists.

The museum opened on March 3rd, 1944, following a proposal from a Moscow art festival in 1940. The State Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg contributed several major works in 1947, which formed the foundation of the collection.

The museum displays the largest collection of Buryat art, featuring traditional horsehair tapestries, metalwork, jewelry, and wooden carvings. These pieces show visitors the craftsmanship and artistic traditions that remain important to the local community.

The museum is located near the Central Market in Ulan-Ude, making it easy to find. Both permanent exhibitions and rotating displays of contemporary work are available year-round for visitors.

Significant artworks arrived in 1947 from the State Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg, establishing the core of what the museum displays today. This historical backing from one of the country's most prestigious institutions gave this regional museum genuine importance from the start.
