Ukureyskaya Formation, Geological formation in Zabaykalsky Krai, Russia.
The Ukureyskaya Formation is a geological layer in Zabaykalsky Krai in Eastern Siberia composed of sandstone, siltstone, and tuffite. These rock strata extend across several hundred meters and record a long period of sediment accumulation in the region.
This formation dates to the Bajocian through Tithonian stages approximately 169 to 144 million years ago during the Middle to Late Jurassic period. It formed in a marine or lacustrine environment that reflects the development of life in Eastern Siberia during this time.
Scientists from the Russian Academy of Sciences perform regular geological research at this location to document the evolution of prehistoric species.
Access to this formation requires special permits and equipment due to its remote location in Eastern Siberia with extreme weather conditions. Visitors should be prepared for difficult terrain and long travel times.
Volcanic ash layers in this formation have preserved hundreds of dinosaur skeletons, including six complete skulls of a small herbivorous species. This exceptional preservation makes the site globally significant for paleontological research.
