Gerdauen Castle

Gerdauen Castle is a medieval stone fortification in Zheleznodorozhny with thick walls, multiple towers, and a courtyard within its original foundations. The remaining structures show the typical layout of a fortress built to control and protect a strategic settlement.

The Teutonic Order built this stronghold in 1315 as a control point for the region and to encourage settlement growth. In the 15th century, Dominican monks took over the site and founded a monastery there, giving the place new religious purpose.

The castle reflects how medieval Prussia built its strongholds and serves as a regional cultural landmark today. Its walls and towers show how fortifications shaped the growth of settlements and the lives of people who lived around them.

The ruins are located in the center of Zheleznodorozhny and are easy to reach on foot by following ulitsa Chernyakhovskogo. The site is openly accessible at any time, so visitors can explore at their own pace and view the remaining walls from different angles.

The fortress changed from a military outpost to a religious center, a transformation visible in how its walls were adapted over time. This shift shows how the same structure served different communities across centuries.
