Унорож, Archaeological site in Galichsky District, Russia.
Unorozh is a fortified settlement located on a hill above the Veksa River and covers approximately one and a half hectares. The soil contains multiple layers of cultural remains from the early medieval period that provide information about ancient life at this location.
The settlement flourished from the 9th to the 11th centuries and predates all historically documented cities in the Kostroma region. This location was significant in the early medieval development of the area.
Excavations reveal pottery from Finno-Ugric peoples, Scandinavian bronze pins, and Arab coins that point to an active trading network. These objects show that people from different regions came together at this location to exchange goods.
The site hosts ongoing excavation work that welcomes students and volunteers to participate in research projects. Summer campaigns offer opportunities for visitors to see archaeological fieldwork and learn about the excavation process firsthand.
A stone church dedicated to the Annunciation once stood at the center of the site before being destroyed around 1814. An earthen mound in the northwestern area suggests where defensive walls and structures once protected the settlement.
