Шавыкина пустынь, Kloster in Russland
Shavykina Pustyn is a monastery on an island in the Sergiyevo-Posadsky District, surrounded by rivers and forests with birches, alders, and oaks. The site once contained wooden churches, and today visitors can see ruins and archaeological remains such as pottery fragments and bricks.
The monastery was founded in the late 1300s following a military victory and served as a place of prayer and refuge for monks. The site remained abandoned for centuries until a memorial cross was erected on the grounds in 2001 to mark its historical importance.
The site is best visited during summer or sunny weather and requires preparation for forest paths and uneven ground. Wear appropriate footwear and be prepared for the rural, island location.
The two original wooden churches were named for the Assumption and the Annunciation and held sacred icons that were later transferred to other churches. According to local belief, these icons occasionally return to their original location.
