The Alexander Shilov Gallery is housed in a 19th-century mansion on Znamenka Street, displaying more than 1,200 oil paintings and graphic works across its rooms. The building contains multiple exhibition spaces spread over several levels, creating distinct galleries for viewing the collection.
Artist Alexander Shilov, a recipient of the USSR People's Artist title, donated his collection of approximately 350 works to the Russian state in 1997, establishing the gallery. A 2003 expansion linked two neighboring Empire-style palaces through an underground passage, significantly increasing the display area.
The artworks feature portraits of people from all walks of Russian life—artists, workers, and everyday citizens—rendered through detailed realistic painting. This focus on portraying humanity in all its forms is the driving force behind the entire collection.
The gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday, with extended opening hours on Thursdays. Guided tours available in multiple languages help visitors understand the artworks and navigate the exhibition spaces.
The collection continues to grow as Shilov regularly contributes new works, keeping the exhibition fresh and evolving. Visitors often notice newer paintings displayed alongside older pieces, revealing how the artist's creative output remains active.
