The Masks of Sorrow monument consists of two bronze female faces weighing six tons, with one face looking toward Europe and the other toward Asia.
The monument stands at a site where mass burials of political repression victims took place during the 1930s, with remains discovered during construction work in 1968.
Ernst Neizvestny designed this monument as part of a planned Triangle of Sorrow, intending similar memorials in Magadan and Vorkuta to commemorate repression victims.
The memorial complex operates under the management of the Yekaterinburg History Museum, which maintains the site and conducts research on political repressions.
The sculptor declined a payment of 700,000 dollars and donated the funds toward the monument's installation, which took 27 years to complete.
