Паасо

Paaso is a medieval fortified settlement on a flat-topped hill near Sortavala, rising approximately 79 meters and protected by steep cliffsides. The southern slope features two defensive ramparts that shape the landscape and demonstrate the strategic position of this location.

The site was inhabited from the 12th to the 14th century and served as a refuge for the local population during times of conflict. Stone-built structures housed up to 100 people and made this place an important hub for the surrounding region.

The site's name comes from the local language and reveals itself today through remnants of craft work and everyday routines from the Middle Ages. Visitors can observe how inhabitants lived and worked by examining the traces of dwellings and work areas scattered across the hill.

The site is accessible on foot, and sturdy walking shoes are recommended because the slopes can be steep and slippery. A visit here pairs well with other attractions in Sortavala since the location sits on the edge of town.

Excavations between 1974 and 2006 uncovered more than 3,000 objects, including weapons, jewelry, and everyday items. A remarkable find was a forge where inhabitants manufactured and repaired arrowheads and spears during times of siege.
