Паасо, Archaeological hillfort in Sortavala, Russia
The Paaso fortress stands on a flat-topped hill reaching 79.2 meters above sea level, featuring steep cliffs and two defensive ramparts on its southern slope.
The settlement existed between the 12th and 14th centuries, serving as a refuge for local populations during conflicts and housing up to 100 people in stone-based dwellings.
Archaeological excavations from 1974 to 2006 uncovered over 3,000 artifacts, including jewelry, buckles, rings, and cooking implements, reflecting medieval Karelian life.
The site charges an entrance fee of 400 rubles for regular admission and 350 rubles for discounted tickets starting from October 1, 2024.
Remains of a forge discovered at the site indicate that inhabitants could manufacture and repair weapons, such as arrowheads and spears, during siege situations.
