Борисов-Глебов, Archaeological site in Rybnovsky District, Russia
Borisov-Glebov is an archaeological site perched on a high bank of the Oka River, featuring three protective ramparts and measuring roughly 200 by 120 meters. The preserved remains reveal the layout of a medieval settlement with distinct layers showing different periods of occupation.
The city first appeared in written records in 1180 and operated as a key waypoint along trade routes connecting Kolomna and Old Ryazan within the Ryazan Principality. Its strategic location made it vital for both commerce and regional defense during medieval times.
The name comes from two Russian saints and reflects its role as a religious center for the surrounding region. Walking through the site today, you can sense how faith shaped daily life and community gatherings here.
The site is located about 3 kilometers west of Vakino village and can be reached via local roads. Visitors should bring weather-appropriate clothing as the location is exposed with minimal shelter or facilities.
Beneath the medieval layers lie traces of an Iron Age settlement showing characteristics of Gorodets culture. This reveals that the location attracted human communities across thousands of years from different cultural backgrounds.
