Lena River bridge, Planned bridge in Yakutsk, Russia
The Lena River Bridge is a cable-stayed structure designed to connect Yakutsk with surrounding regions, spanning about 4.6 kilometers (2.9 miles) across the river. Additional connecting roads of roughly 14.5 kilometers (9 miles) will link the Lena and Kolyma federal highways with the Vilyui transportation route.
The project emerged from the need for a reliable year-round connection in a region with extreme climate where traditional transport is seasonally limited. The Russian government signed a concession agreement in 2020 with VIS Group to pursue this transportation initiative.
The bridge will change daily travel for Yakutsk residents who currently depend on ice roads in winter and ferries in summer. It represents a shift toward year-round mobility for the city.
The structure will handle up to 5,300 vehicles daily and provide a stable alternative to seasonal ice roads and ferry services. Visitors should note the bridge is still under planning or construction and is not yet passable.
The project is noteworthy as the first cable-stayed bridge built under permafrost conditions, with completion scheduled for 2028. The extreme temperatures and frozen ground require specialized construction techniques never before applied at this scale.
