Землякам-комсомольчанам, павшим в боях за Родину в суровые годы Великой Отечественной войны, War memorial in Komsomolsk-on-Amur, Russia.
Землякам-комсомольчанам, павшим в боях за Родину в суровые годы Великой Отечественной войны is a war memorial in Komsomolsk-on-Amur, built from concrete and granite. It consists of three white pylons shaped like bayonets, a central eternal flame, and granite blocks carved with faces representing different roles in the Second World War such as infantry, tank crews, and sailors.
The memorial was built in 1972 to honor those from Komsomolsk-on-Amur who died in the Second World War. The eternal flame was lit in 1975 from the furnace of the local Amursteel plant and brought to the site.
Stone plates around the memorial carry the names of local residents who died in the war, turning a visit into something personal rather than abstract. Reading the names one by one gives a sense of how deeply the war touched this city.
The memorial sits in a central part of the city and can be visited at any time without restrictions. Daytime visits are best for reading the names on the stone plates and seeing the carved details on the granite blocks clearly.
In 2018, an Avenue of Victory Order Cavaliers was added to the site, lined with eleven bronze busts leading toward the main memorial. Each bust portrays a person from the city who received one of the highest Soviet military honors.
