Monastère de la Trinité-Saint-Philippe-de-l'Irap
Monastère de la Trinité-Saint-Philippe-de-l'Irap, Orthodox monastery in Zeleny Bereg, Russia
The Trinity-Saint-Philippe-de-l'Irap Monastery sits at the meeting point of Maly Irap Creek and Andoga River, surrounded by pine forests in northern Russia. The complex includes several churches and buildings, with the Trinity Church as the main structure and ongoing restoration work on various historical elements.
The monastery was founded in 1512 by Saint Philippe and received fishing rights from Tsar Ivan the Terrible on several rivers. After destruction by Lithuanian soldiers, it was rebuilt around 1660 and has functioned as a religious site ever since.
The monastery preserves religious manuscripts and sacred objects that visitors can encounter in its churches. The site remains a center of Orthodox devotion and draws pilgrims seeking the spiritual significance the place holds.
The grounds are accessible daily, allowing visitors to explore the site while restoration work continues on historical buildings. It is best to be prepared for unpaved paths and wooded surroundings, and to check local conditions regularly.
The monastery endured multiple cycles of destruction, including an attack by Lithuanian soldiers that caused manuscript losses and abandonment for around fifty years. This turbulent past left lasting marks on its current physical form and spiritual character.
