Sarov hillfort is a fortified settlement on the banks of the Sarovka River covering a large area. The site contains remnants of homes, workshops, and burial grounds that document medieval settlement patterns.
The site developed as a Mordovian settlement during the medieval period before Mongol expansion. Later the location was transformed when a monastery was established there in the 18th century.
The site holds remains from Erzya peoples who made their homes here during the medieval period. Visitors can see how these communities organized their settlements through the layout of residential areas and craft zones.
The complex contains several separate sections each with distinct characteristics that can be explored together. Plan extra time to understand the different areas and how the settlement was laid out across the terrain.
This location is among the largest fortified settlements built by Mordovian peoples before Mongol times. Excavations have uncovered hundreds of objects including jewelry and household items that provide insight into medieval daily life.
