Varvarina Gora, Archaeological burial ground in Staraya Bryan, Russia
Varvarinas Hill is an archaeological burial site near Staraya Bryan with nine excavated graves and six preserved human remains, covered by rock layers arranged in two to three levels. The site rises about 45 to 50 meters above the left bank of the Bryanka River and contains many unexcavated burial mounds.
The burial ground dates to the 10th and 11th centuries and represents early nomadic peoples who migrated northward from Central Asian steppes. This period marks an important phase of settlement and cultural exchange in the region.
The burial site shows traces of ancient funeral practices with wooden coffins and everyday items placed with the deceased. These findings reveal how people once honored their dead and prepared them for the afterlife.
The site sits on a hilltop offering good vantage points and is reachable on foot, though the terrain slopes steeply in places. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and be aware of uneven ground, especially around the burial mounds.
The site shares its name with a nearby Late Paleolithic settlement discovered in 1961, indicating a longer human presence in the area. This connection shows how the region was inhabited across many centuries.
