Storforsen, Nature reserve and waterfall system in Älvsbyn Municipality, Sweden
Storforsen is a rapid system in northern Sweden that unfolds without regulation by dams. The river here forms several sections of rushing water between rock cliffs and wide basins.
The river served as a transport route for cut timber from surrounding forests until the eighties. Structures and installations from the log-floating era remain visible at several points.
The site takes its name from the powerful current that shaped local life for centuries. On summer weekends, visitors use the fire pits and grilling areas along the maintained paths.
The protected area lies a few kilometers north of Älvsbyn and offers wooden walkways for access to the best viewpoints. Signs in several languages provide information about the watercourse and the surrounding environment.
During spring floods, the water volume swells dramatically and transforms the rapid into a thundering spectacle. The change between calm summer months and the powerful melt season is clearly visible.
