Strömsund Bridge, Cable-stayed road bridge in Strömsund Municipality, Sweden
Strömsund Bridge is a cable-stayed road bridge spanning the Ströms Vattudal river with a total length of 332 meters and a main span of 182 meters. The structure measures 14.3 meters wide and carries traffic on the European route E45 connecting both sides of the municipality.
The bridge was designed by German company Demag following an international competition in 1953 and opened to traffic in September 1956. It marked a turning point in the development of modern bridge engineering techniques.
The structure earned the name Golden Gate of Jämtland among residents, marking its importance as a regional landmark. It represents local pride in engineering achievement and shapes how people see the area.
The structure is easily accessible from the European route E45 and carries constant traffic in both directions. Visitors can view the bridge from the riverbanks and get a good perspective of its construction.
The bridge was Scandinavia's first large-scale cable-stayed structure with two cables attached at a single point on the tower. This design feature made it a pioneer structure in modern engineering.
