Sundholmen Castle

Sundholmen Castle is a medieval castle ruin in Borås Municipality with stone remains that sit on elevated ground. The foundations and partial walls mark the original footprint of the structure.

The castle was built in medieval times and served as a fortified position to control trade routes in the region. It played an important role in protecting these pathways through Västra Götaland.

The ruins show how people built and defended their strongholds in medieval times. You can see here which building materials and techniques were used back then to construct strong walls.

The site is reachable via marked paths through the countryside of Äspereds sogn, about 20 kilometers from central Borås. The ruin sits on elevated ground, so be prepared for uneven terrain.

From the foundations, you can overlook the surrounding land and get a sense of why this spot was chosen for a stronghold. The elevated position was strategically important for watching over trade routes of that time.
