Hovfjället, Nature reserve in Torsby Municipality, Sweden
Hovfjället is a 1,400-hectare nature reserve featuring old-growth forests, wetlands, and terraced slopes that create distinct zones with different plant communities. The landscape shows clear elevation changes and varied forest types mixed with open boggy areas.
The reserve was officially established on November 7, 1969, to protect natural Swedish forest landscapes. Sections of ancient woodland remain untouched by human activity and show how these forests appeared in their original state.
The reserve is home to forest birds like capercaillie and hazel grouse that depend on the woodland habitat for survival.
The site has several marked walking trails including Torprundan and Råkullsrundan that guide visitors through different forest sections. Rest areas are located at key spots along the trails where you can stop and observe the surroundings.
The reserve combines forest protection with winter sports facilities, offering downhill slopes and cross-country skiing tracks for winter visitors. This blend of conservation and recreation shows how both can coexist in the same area.
