Stadshotellet, Karlstad, building in Karlstad Municipality, Sweden
Stadshotellet in Karlstad is a hotel located near the Klarälven river, close to the main square Stora Torget in the city center. The building has a yellowish color, holds 45 guest rooms, and was originally built with two stories before a third floor was added roughly 30 years later.
The hotel opened in 1871, following a major fire in 1865 that destroyed much of Karlstad and created a need for quality lodging. Construction was costly and went over budget, but the building was completed and became a popular destination for travelers visiting the city.
The hotel is centrally located and easy to reach, situated near the main square and river with good access to shops and cafes nearby. The location offers pleasant views and makes it simple to walk along the waterfront paths.
The grounds contain remains of Karlstad's first church and cemetery beneath its foundations. A cellar called Munken, dating to Queen Kristina's era, once served multiple purposes including storage of human remains from past burials.
