Sri Manmatha Karuneshvarar Temple, Hindu temple in Kampong Bugis, Singapore
Sri Manmatha Karuneshvarar Temple is a Hindu temple in the Kampong Bugis area of Singapore. It features a multi-tiered gopuram tower decorated with figures from Hindu mythology, along with several inner shrines dedicated to different deities.
The temple was founded in 1888 by workers from a nearby factory who needed a fixed place for their religious practices. It was fully rebuilt between 1935 and 1937, taking on the form it largely retains today.
The temple follows the South Indian style and reflects the Tamil community that has used it for generations. On festival days, devotees bring flower garlands and fruit offerings, filling the courtyard with color and activity.
The temple is close to Lavender MRT Station and easy to reach by public transport. Those wishing to take photographs should ask for permission from the temple management before doing so.
The land on which the temple stands was granted directly by the Governor of the Straits Settlements to its original trustees, which was highly unusual at the time. This official grant gave the community a lasting and legally secure foundation for their place of worship.
