Beauty World Market, Open-air marketplace at Upper Bukit Timah Road, Singapore
Beauty World Market was an open-air marketplace on Upper Bukit Timah Road in Singapore, with stalls selling fresh produce, textiles, household goods, and local food. The stalls were grouped by type of merchandise, so shoppers could move through clearly defined sections to find what they needed.
The market opened in 1947 on the site of a former amusement park that had been heavily damaged during the Japanese occupation in World War II. After the war ended, the cleared land gave way to a commercial space that served the surrounding neighborhood.
The market brought together vendors from Chinese, Malay, and Indian backgrounds, each selling goods tied to their own community's daily needs. Walking through the stalls, a visitor could notice this mix in the foods, fabrics, and household items on display side by side.
The market is easy to reach from the Beauty World station on the Downtown Line, with bus connections also stopping nearby. Going early in the morning gives the best access to the full range of stalls before the crowds build up.
The name comes from combining the founder's daughter's name with the word 'World', following a trend among local entrepreneurs who named their venues after similar places like Happy World elsewhere in the city. This practice was common enough in mid-20th century Singapore that several of these named spots are still remembered today.
