Mueang Kamphaeng Phet

Mueang Kamphaeng Phet, District capital in Kamphaeng Phet, Thailand.

Mueang Kamphaeng Phet is the central district of Kamphaeng Phet Province, serving as the main administrative hub for the wider region. It contains several towns and communities scattered across the landscape, with the Ping River running through the area and shaping local geography.

The area was originally known as Chakangrao during the Sukhothai Kingdom and received its current name in 1917. This renaming reflected administrative changes that took place during Thailand's modernization period.

The district maintains administrative authority over numerous temples, including Wat Phra Borom That, while preserving traditional Thai governmental structures through local sub-district organizations.

The district has two main centers at Kamphaeng Phet and Nong Pling where visitors can find services and lodging. Getting around by motorbike or local transport helps you explore the scattered communities and visit temples throughout the area.

The district sits at roughly 80 meters elevation and spreads across both banks of the Ping River. Ancient settlements of Chakangrao and Nakhon Chum mark where people traditionally lived on the river's eastern and western sides.
