Somdet Phra Narai National Museum, National museum in Tha Hin, Thailand.
The Somdet Phra Narai National Museum is a national museum in the Tha Hin area of Lopburi, housed within a 17th-century palace compound. The collection covers sculptures, ceramics, and artifacts that trace the region's history from prehistoric times to more recent centuries.
The palace compound was built in the 17th century under King Narai the Great, who made Lopburi a center for diplomatic contacts with Europe and Asia. The building originally served as a guesthouse for foreign envoys before being converted into a museum.
The displays include Buddhist sculptures, ceramics, and objects from the Dvaravati and Khmer periods found in the Lopburi region. It is striking to see how Indian, Khmer, and local styles appear side by side in the same collection.
The museum sits on Sorasak Road in central Lopburi, within walking distance of other historic sites in the area. Visiting in the morning is a good idea, as the rooms tend to be quieter and the light in the courtyard is at its best.
Parts of the original brick walls and gateways from King Narai's time are still visible in the courtyard of the compound, and they were never fully rebuilt. This gives the visit a double character, as you move between a museum and what feels like an open-air archaeological site.
