Wat Phra That Pha Ngao, Buddhist temple in Ban Sop Kham, Thailand.
Wat Phra That Pha Ngao is a Buddhist temple in Ban Sop Kham with a complex layout featuring multiple religious buildings, two museums, and an educational center overlooking the Mekong River. The grounds are connected by staircases decorated with Naga figures leading to the main chapel, along with a white chedi and various pathways throughout the site.
The temple was originally known as Wat Sobkhame before being relocated due to flooding of its original location. This move led to the discovery of a cave called Tham Pha Ngao containing ancient ruins nearby.
The Tripitaka Hall displays wooden cabinets housing Buddhist scriptures and religious objects from across northern Thailand and other countries. Visitors can see how these collections reflect the spiritual heritage and learning traditions of the region.
Access to different areas is provided through the Naga staircase leading to the main chapel, with additional pathways extending to the white chedi and other parts of the grounds. Wear appropriate footwear as the route involves stairs and uneven surfaces.
In 1976, monks discovered two Buddha statues hidden in a nearby cave, including one estimated to be between 700 and 1300 years old. This ancient statue is now carefully preserved within the temple grounds and represents a significant archaeological find.
