Wat Amphawa

Wat Amphawa is a historic Buddhist temple in Ban Chang Lo situated near the Amphawa floating market outside Bangkok. The structure houses a central golden Buddha statue and displays architectural features from the Ayutthaya period.

The temple originated during a significant period of Siamese history and became involved in 18th-century conflicts between Siam and Burmese forces. After 1768 it fell into neglect but was later restored and now stands as a registered historic site.

The temple grounds display statues of traditional Muay Thai combat, connecting spiritual practice with Thailand's martial arts customs. These representations show how the community links the sacred with local identity.

The easiest way to visit is by taking an organized boat tour from Amphawa floating market or arranging private water transport. Wear sturdy shoes and respect local customs when entering the shrine area.

The grounds hold memorial statues of King Taksin and his soldiers installed in 1967 as part of a bicentennial restoration project. These monuments preserve memory of a decisive moment in Thai history and underscore the place's importance to local identity.
