Wat Sai

Wat Sai, Buddhist temple in Bang Khlo, Thailand.

Description

Wat Sai is an active temple in Bangkok featuring two ubosot halls: one built in Ayutthaya style and another in Rattanakosin style, representing different architectural periods. The grounds include a prayer hall with various Buddha images and sit along a canal in a residential neighborhood.

History

The site was founded in 1703 during the Ayutthaya period and received official recognition in 1708 as a community place of worship through Wisungkhamsima designation. This formal registration established it as a lasting community shrine with ongoing social importance.

Culture

The temple houses many Buddha images in its prayer hall and displays Tamnak Thong, a mansion decorated with gold leaf painted on black lacquer. This structure reveals the importance of the site to local worshippers and shows traditional artistic skills passed down through generations.

Practical

This remains an active place of worship where visitors can observe traditional religious practices and rituals. The setting in a residential area along the canal provides a genuine sense of how the community uses the space in daily life.

Did you know?

The site once hosted a floating market where local farmers traded from boats along the canal until 1977. The waterway remains today, making it possible to imagine the busier past when commerce and faith coexisted in this space.
