Şar, mahalle (administrative quarter) in Tufanbeyli, Adana, south-central Turkey
Şar is a village in the Tufanbeyli district of Adana province in Turkey, located in the southern part of the country. The settlement consists of stone houses arranged along narrow roads on a gentle slope, with flat or slightly pitched roofs that blend into the landscape. Ancient ruins, including rock tombs, temple remnants, and old walls from Roman and Byzantine times, are scattered throughout and around the village.
Şar was an important settlement during Hittite times with religious structures and administrative functions. The ruins show later Roman and Byzantine occupation, with temple remains built around the 4th century and rock-cut tombs and fortifications dating from various ancient periods.
The visit is best in spring or fall when the weather is mild and summer heat is absent. Comfortable shoes are required since there are uneven paths and steep areas around the ruins.
A notable structure in the village is the so-called Broken Church, whose construction is estimated around the 4th century and shows geometric and religious motifs in its remains. Additionally, an old gate called Ala Gate once stood in the area as part of the ancient defensive structures.
