Glenmorangie distillery, Whisky distillery in Tain, Scotland
Glenmorangie is a single malt whisky distillery in Tain, a small town on the east coast of the Scottish Highlands. The facility uses copper stills over eight metres tall, among the tallest in Scotland, which increases copper contact during distillation.
William Matheson acquired the Morangie farm in 1843 and converted existing agricultural buildings into a distillery that began production the same year. The facility changed ownership several times and was expanded repeatedly during the twentieth century to increase capacity.
The name derives from Mòr-Choinnich in Gaelic, referring to the green valley through which the stream once powered a mill on this site. Visitors today can see the cooperage workshops where craftsmen repair barrels by hand, a skill maintained at few distilleries.
Guided tours run daily and must be booked in advance through the website or by phone on 01862 892477. Visits last between one and two hours depending on the tour chosen, and end with a tasting session.
The water comes from the Tarlogie Springs, which flow through limestone and sandstone layers formed over one hundred million years ago. These rock strata give the water a mineral character that influences the taste of the whisky.
