Corpus Christi College, College in Cambridge, England
Corpus Christi College is a college of the University of Cambridge composed of medieval courtyards housing undergraduate rooms, two libraries, dining halls, and student facilities at two main sites. The older section stands near the city center, while the newer Leckhampton campus offers sports grounds and additional residential space.
The Guild of Corpus Christi and the Guild of the Blessed Virgin Mary founded the college in 1352 as the only Cambridge institution created by townspeople rather than clergy or aristocrats. Later centuries brought architectural additions, yet the Old Court retains elements from the 14th century.
The Parker Library holds medieval manuscripts that visitors can view on select days during term. The Corpus Playroom functions as a theater where students stage performances throughout the academic year.
Visitors can enter the Old Court during official opening hours, though some areas remain accessible only during vacation periods. The main entrance sits on Trumpington Street, allowing access on foot from the city center.
The Old Court still displays wooden window frames from the 1350s that were soaked in oil because glass windows did not exist at the time. The original rooms were much smaller than modern student quarters and often featured just a tiny fireplace.
