Harlech Castle, Medieval coastal fortress in Harlech, Wales

The stone castle stands on a rocky cliff with two rings of defensive walls, four round towers, and a massive twin-towered gatehouse.

Edward I of England commissioned Master James of Saint George to construct this defensive stronghold between 1282 and 1289 for 8,190 pounds.

The seven-year siege of the castle during the Wars of the Roses inspired the traditional military march Men of Harlech.

Visitors can access the castle through a modern bridge that connects to the original entrance, with seasonal opening hours and reduced prices for students.

The castle maintained a direct connection to the sea through a protected stairway of 108 steps, allowing supplies during extended sieges.
