Parish Church of St Tanwg, Medieval church in Llandanwg, Wales
The Parish Church of St Tanwg is a rectangular stone building standing near the coast and built with local rubble stone. The structure displays architectural features from different periods, including a tall east window and modifications from the 17th century.
The church contains inscribed stones from the 6th century that indicate early religious activity at this site. Over time the building underwent repairs and changes that are marked in carved initials from later periods.
The church holds inscribed stones dating back to the 6th century that show this was a place of faith for many generations. People have worshipped and buried their dead here across the centuries.
The building sits very close to the sea and the area can become wet during high water, so walk carefully in bad weather. The churchyard has many graves, so stay respectfully on the paths.
The churchyard has been partially buried by sand accumulation over the centuries, giving the place an unusual appearance. This gradual covering by sand across generations creates a landscape where old graves lie hidden beneath the surface.
