Warkworth Castle, Medieval fortress in Warkworth, England
Warkworth Castle is a stone fortress situated on a hilltop overlooking the River Coquet in northern England. The structure features a large keep with a distinctive cross-shaped design and surrounding defensive walls that enclose the main courtyard area.
The Percy family received control of the site in 1332 and began converting its wooden structures into stone defenses. Over the following centuries they enlarged and reinforced it to strengthen its position along the northern border.
The castle shows how medieval nobility lived and conducted their affairs within its walls. Visitors can observe the different spaces where lords held meetings, families gathered, and religious ceremonies took place.
The site sits beside the river and is walkable from the village center in a short stroll. Visitors should expect uneven ground and sloped access paths, as the castle occupies elevated terrain.
The cross-shaped keep houses a complete medieval residence spanning three floors, with separate kitchens, chambers, and a chapel all contained within one structure. This compact design demonstrates how a wealthy family managed all their daily functions in a single building.
