Broadstairs, Coastal resort town in Thanet, England
Broadstairs is a coastal town in Thanet on the southeastern tip of England that stretches along several protected bays. The beaches sit at regular intervals between low cliffs and offer expanses of sand that grow larger at low tide.
During the 19th century the town shifted from a small fishing settlement to a popular seaside resort for visitors from London. The development of the railway connection to Kent made the coast accessible for day trips and longer stays.
Botany Bay takes its name from a smuggling incident when goods from an Australian penal colony of the same name washed up on this shore. Today the white chalk formations draw visitors who walk between the rock stacks and search for fossils along the tideline.
Trains from London St Pancras International reach the town in around 1 hour and 20 minutes and stop directly on the main street. All beaches sit within walking distance from the station and connect through a coastal footpath.
The shopfronts along Harbour Street still stand in their original wooden frames from the Victorian era. Seals often swim near the jetty at Viking Bay, drawn by the fishing boats that return each morning.
