Middle Temple, Legal education institution in Temple district, City of London, England.
Middle Temple is one of the historic legal societies within the Temple district of the City of London. Its large dining hall features oak paneling, a double hammer-beam roof, and stained glass windows displaying heraldic symbols.
Templars occupied the grounds until their dissolution in the early 14th century. Lawyers then took over the buildings as tenants and formed their own societies there.
Students pursuing a career at the Bar share meals at long oak tables, creating bonds across generations of legal professionals. Formal gowns are still worn during ceremonial occasions.
The hall and gardens are accessible only during guided tours or special events, as this remains a working legal complex. Visitors can view the exterior and courtyards from public walkways.
William Shakespeare performed in a production of his own play here in 1602. That first performance unfolded in the same hall where trainee lawyers still dine today.
