Epsom, Market town in Surrey, England
Epsom is a town in the borough of Epsom and Ewell in Surrey, roughly 15 miles (24 kilometers) southwest of central London. It sits at the base of the North Downs and is surrounded by green spaces, woodlands, and conservation areas.
A healer discovered a mineral spring on Epsom Common in 1618, its water rich in magnesium sulfate. Over the following decades, the place grew into a fashionable spa resort for English society.
The town takes its name from Epsom salts, first identified here in the 17th century and still used in medicine today. Street names and old buildings around the center recall the era when people traveled from across England to drink the mineral water.
Several railway stations connect the town directly to London Victoria and Waterloo, with journey times around half an hour. The town center is compact and easy to explore on foot, with shops, cafés, and restaurants along the main street.
Epsom Downs Racecourse holds The Derby every June, one of the oldest horse races in the world, founded in 1780. Thousands gather on race day to watch the event and picnic on the open grassland surrounding the track.
