Helensburgh, Coastal town in Argyll and Bute, Scotland

Helensburgh is a coastal town in Argyll and Bute, Scotland, sitting along the northern shore of the Firth of Clyde. Wide streets run down from the center toward the waterfront, lined with sandstone villas and green spaces that invite walking.

Sir James Colquhoun founded the settlement in 1776, naming it after his wife Helen Sutherland and transforming farmland into a planned residential area. Over the following decades, it grew as a favored retreat for wealthy Glasgow families seeking proximity to the shore.

Visitors walk along promenades where local families gather for weekend strolls, passing sandstone houses that now serve as homes, shops and cafés. The town retains its character as a quiet residential retreat, with gardens and parks that invite resting and reading by the water.

Trains run regularly to Glasgow and continue north along the West Highland Railway Line, making arrival straightforward. Footpaths along the shore are easy to reach, with benches offering views of the water and the hills beyond.

John Logie Baird conducted his early television experiments in a small room here before his invention gained worldwide recognition. His workshop stood in a modest building that no longer exists, yet the story of television began here by the shore.
