Avon, Former administrative territory in South West England, United Kingdom.
Avon was an administrative region in South West England that stretched from Gloucestershire to Somerset, encompassing major cities like Bristol, Bath, and Weston-super-Mare. The area followed the River Avon and connected urban centers with surrounding countryside.
The region was formed in 1974 through local government reforms, merging parts of Gloucestershire and Somerset into a single county. After 22 years, Avon was dissolved in 1996 and split into four independent unitary authorities.
The territory combined urban centers and countryside regions, with Bristol functioning as its administrative center and main economic force.
The region is now governed by four separate administrative authorities: Bath and North East Somerset, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire, and Bristol City. Visitors can still trace the historical boundaries through the different local governance structures.
The geographical position at 51.45°N latitude and 2.583°W longitude places this former county at the meeting point of ancient Gloucestershire and Somerset boundaries.
