Hunterston B nuclear power station, nuclear power station in North Ayrshire, Scotland, UK
Hunterston B is a decommissioned nuclear power plant on the coast of North Ayrshire, Scotland, that ran two Advanced Gas-cooled Reactors. It stopped generating electricity in 2023 and is now in the process of being dismantled and cleared of radioactive materials.
The station came online in 1976 as part of Britain's push to expand nuclear energy, and it ran for nearly five decades. It was one of the last of its generation of British reactors to shut down when it finally closed in 2023.
The site is closed to the public because active decommissioning work is ongoing on the grounds. The large structures are visible from the nearby coastline, which gives a clear view of the facility from a safe distance.
Hunterston B ran far longer than its original design intended, as the reactors were built to last around 25 years but operated for nearly twice that. The full decommissioning process is expected to take several decades before the land can be fully released.
