Great Castle House, Grade I listed townhouse in Monmouth, Wales
Great Castle House is a townhouse in Monmouth built from pink and grey Old Red Sandstone with a balanced front facade. The building today contains exhibition spaces about local and military history.
The house was built in 1673 for a wealthy nobleman and briefly served as the seat of a regional governing body. It was constructed partly using stone salvaged from a nearby castle damaged during the Civil War.
The ground-floor fireplace and decorations show what wealthy families valued in the 17th century. These carefully designed rooms reflect how prosperity and taste went hand in hand at that time.
The building can be visited when the museum is open, though the exterior is visible and worth seeing from the street. Visitors should check ahead as opening times may vary throughout the year.
The impressive first floor contains a reception hall that was originally several smaller rooms knocked together. This reconfiguration created a grander space that better suited the owner's social standing.
