Newgate, City gate of London
Newgate was one of the historic seven gates of the London Wall around the City of London.
The gate was first established in Roman times though its name came about in the 12th century.
Newgate has been depicted in various literary works, most notably Charles Dickens' 'A Tale of Two Cities'
Today, no visible remains exist, but it's near the site of the Old Bailey, a famous courthouse.
Newgate Prison, which took its name from the gate, was notorious for public executions carried out until 1868.
